I tend to think of stained glass or (art-glass) as a semi precious material – rather like amethysts or emeralds. A lot of hard work goes into the production of this material, and it is becoming more and more expensive due to increased environment protection standards and importation fees.
In the Middle Ages glass was cut with a heated and sharply pointed iron rod. The red hot point was drawn along the moistened surface of the glass causing it to snap apart; due to the thermal shock created by the heat and the water. The Medieval glaziers were exposed to a high risk of burns as well as glass cuts.
There are a great many stained glass books to choose from when starting out as a student; but when it comes to painting on glass the selection is somewhat limited. Fortunately there is one book which is probably the only one you will ever need.
